About military and veterans calculators

Military and veterans calculators help with the arithmetic behind service and benefits: how separate VA disability ratings combine into one rating, for example. The rules come from law and VA regulations rather than from simple formulas, so each calculator here follows the official rule, cites it, and shows its working step by step.

These tools are for understanding and checking numbers. They don't decide eligibility, file claims or replace a VA decision.

Official rules, not rules of thumb

Many benefits figures can't be worked out with ordinary arithmetic. VA disability ratings, for instance, aren't added together: they are combined with the Combined Ratings Table in 38 CFR §4.25, with a bilateral factor for paired arms, legs and muscles under §4.26, and rounded once at the end. A quick sum gives the wrong answer, and so can a calculator that skips a rule.

Calculators in this category:

  • follow the current text of the regulation or official guidance, and link to it;
  • reproduce the worked examples that VA and the regulations publish;
  • show every step, so a result can be checked by hand or with a representative;
  • say clearly what they don't include.

Estimates and official decisions

A calculator result is an estimate based on the numbers you enter. The official figure is always the one in your VA decision or service record. If a result here differs from an official decision, the difference usually comes from information the calculator wasn't given, such as a rating, a body area or a rule outside its scope.

Accredited representatives, such as those from Veterans Service Organizations, can review a decision with you, and VA.gov lists your current ratings and benefits once you sign in.

Current tools

The current library includes the VA Disability Rating Combined Calculator. It combines individual ratings using the VA's Combined Ratings Table, applies the bilateral factor to arms, legs and paired skeletal muscles, checks the 2023 most-favorable bilateral rule, and lists every step from the order of severity to the final rounding.

New military and veterans tools appear in the list above as they are published.

Privacy

Calculators run in your browser. The ratings and other details you enter aren't sent to our servers, saved or added to the page address.

Accuracy and limits

Each calculator is tested against official examples and edge cases, as described in the site's methodology. Rules change, so each calculator page names the sources and the version of the rules it follows. For decisions about your benefits, rely on VA and on an accredited representative, not on an estimate.
