The Acid Molarity Formula

The standard formula to determine the molar concentration (M) of a stock solution is:

Molarity = (Weight Percentage × Density × 10) ÷ Molecular Weight

Understanding the Variables

  • Weight Percentage (w/w %): The mass fraction of the solute in the solution. In this formula, enter it as a whole number (e.g., 37 for 37%).
  • Density: The specific gravity of the liquid, typically measured in grams per milliliter (g/mL).
  • Multiplier (10): A unit conversion factor that adjusts grams per milliliter and percentages into grams per liter.
  • Molecular Weight (MW): The mass of one mole of the acid, measured in grams per mole (g/mol).

Example Calculation: Hydrochloric Acid

Consider a standard bottle of concentrated Hydrochloric Acid (HCl). The label lists a weight percentage of 37%, a density of 1.19 g/mL, and a molecular weight of 36.46 g/mol.

  1. Multiply the weight percentage (37) by the density (1.19).
  2. Multiply that result by 10 to get 440.3.
  3. Divide 440.3 by the molecular weight (36.46).
  4. The resulting concentration is approximately 12.07 M.
