2-Way vs. 3-Way Betting Markets: Calculating True Probability
Compare 2-way and 3-way betting markets. Learn how the addition of a draw or tie outcome mathematically changes the sportsbook vig and true probability.
2-Way vs. 3-Way Betting Markets: Calculating True Probability
When performing probability analysis, the structure of the market drastically changes how the mathematical overround is calculated. The process of finding true probability in a standard 2-Way market differs significantly from a 3-Way market.
The 2-Way Market (Head-to-Head)
A 2-Way market features only two possible outcomes: Team A wins, or Team B wins. This is the standard structure for basketball, baseball, and American football point spreads and moneylines.
- The Math: You calculate the implied probability of Side 1 and Side 2. The sum is the total implied probability.
- The Vig: Standard 2-way markets typically carry a lower sportsbook hold, generally hovering around 4% to 5%.
The 3-Way Market (Win/Loss/Draw)
A 3-Way market introduces a third possible outcome: a Draw or Tie. This is the standard structure for global soccer (1X2 markets) and regulation NHL hockey.
- The Math: To find the total implied probability, you must calculate and sum the percentages for Team A, Team B, and the Draw. Leaving out the Draw will result in wildly inaccurate probability estimates.
- The Vig: 3-Way markets generally carry a significantly higher overround than 2-way markets, frequently carrying a sportsbook hold between 6% and 9%. Because there are more outcomes, the bookmaker bakes in a larger margin of error.
Analyzing the Differences
Because the math changes based on the number of outcomes, it is critical to use a no vig odds calculator that natively supports both market types. Attempting to run a 2-way mathematical formula on a 3-way soccer line will result in false fair odds, leading to incorrect probability assumptions.
