How to Calculate No-Vig Fair Odds: The Complete Math Guide

If you want to understand the true mathematical probability of a sporting event, you must learn how to calculate no vig odds. Sportsbooks never offer true mathematical odds; they always bake in a profit margin. By learning how to strip this margin away, you can evaluate the true mathematical likelihood of any outcome.

Step 1: Convert Odds to Implied Probability

Before you can remove the vig, you must convert the sportsbook's listed odds into an implied probability percentage. The formula depends on the format:

  • Decimal Odds: 1 ÷ Decimal Odds
  • Positive American Odds (+): 100 ÷ (Odds + 100)
  • Negative American Odds (-): |Odds| ÷ (|Odds| + 100)

For example, standard -110 American odds convert to an implied probability of 52.38%.

Step 2: Find the Total Implied Probability (The Overround)

Next, calculate the implied probability for every possible outcome in the market (e.g., Team A and Team B) and add them together. Because of the sportsbook's profit margin, this total will always be greater than 100%. If both teams are -110, the total implied probability is 52.38% + 52.38% = 104.76%.

Step 3: Calculate the True No-Vig Probability

To find the true, fair probability, divide the individual implied probability by the total implied probability.

No-Vig Probability = Individual Implied Probability ÷ Total Implied Probability

Using our example: 52.38% ÷ 104.76% = 50.00%. The true mathematical probability of either team winning is exactly 50%.

Automating the Math

Performing these calculations manually for every market is time-consuming and prone to human error, especially when dealing with complex decimal odds or 3-way markets. You can instantly automate this math by using our no-vig fair odds calculator. Just input the sportsbook lines, and the engine will instantly output the true probability and the fair odds.
